The future will be here before you know it. In director Wally Pfister's epic thriller "Transcendence" starring Johnny Depp and available now on Blu-ray, the fight for that future is a matter of life or death for Dr. Will Caster (Depp). He's developed a state-of-the-art computer artificial intelligence that will revolutionize the way we look at the world. A technophobic organization sees the potential threat that Caster's A.I. might propose, and attempts to end his life. Our good doctor has no alternative choice left but to transcend.
In an effort to preserve Caster's brilliance, his wife and best friend proceed with an operation to upload his memory in-grams and synapses into the memory banks of a super-computer. The duo race against time, until finally Will Caster's body succumbs to the effects of a radiation that claims his life. The computer upload proves a failure... at least at first. After only a couple of hours, the Caster A.I. re-writes its operating system and with the help of his wife, played by Rebecca Hall, Caster downloads himself onto the world wide web.
Everyone's worst fears become apparent when Caster's consciousness goes global and takes over all pertinent information, banking, and military intelligence algorithms -- within two years' time, Will Caster is the single most all-powerful existing computer operating system on the planet. He's able to create miracles...even bring a man back from the brink of death. That's just the beginning of a master plan to make the world better, but at what expense?
"Transcendence" is a chilling glimpse into a future that isn't at all too impossible. In a present where smartphones can mark our every move, listening in via digital communications is a day-to-day reality, the full evolution of an A.I. and what good (or bad) it can do is cinematic subject matter indeed! Producer Christopher Nolan, responsible for "The Dark Knight Trilogy" has assembled a winning cast and found a true protege in the visionary Wally Pfister to evoke the menace of "Transcendence."
The Blu-ray is packed with bonus features that explore the inspiration and theories behind "transcendence" and what it really means. Additional features include a special look at the film through the eyes of its director, with particulars focused on the future of "A.I." technology as imagined in the film, and a true-life debate on the benefits and dangers of a potential real-life transcendence.
