No Vaccine? No Show for Broadway's Laura Osnes

Friday August 13, 2021

Broadway actress Laura Osnes has been let go from a Hamptons show because she refuses to be vaccinated against COVID-19, reports the New York Post's Page Six.

She was to appear in a star-studded audience for a one-night production of "Crazy For You" at the Guild Hall in East Hampton on Aug. 29 that's being directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman, who choreographed the original production in 1992 for which she won her first of five Tony Awards.

"But the theater tells Page Six that it requires staff and performers to be vaccinated, or submit a negative COVID test."

Page Six added that the" two-time Tony nominee Osnes — who starred in the title role of the Broadway adaptation of "Cinderella" from 2013 to 2014 — revealed that she hadn't been vaccinated, and announced that she doesn't trust the jabs."

Osnes has described herself in interviews as a Christian conservative.

She is said to be replaced by Sierra Boggess, who played Ariel in the Broadway adaptation of "The Little Mermaid."

"We have a requirement now along the lines of what Actors' Equity is requiring, and what Broadway is requiring, for performances," the theater's artistic director, Josh Gladstone, told Page Six when reached for comment. "So yes — we're very excited with the cast that we have, and we're delighted Susan has put together a beautiful evening. We're sorry not to have Laura on this, [and] we will look forward to working with Laura again. We are concerned about maintaining the safety of our staff and our audiences."

However, a rep for Guild Hall subsequently clarified: "The policy of Guild Hall is that performers have the option to provide proof of full vaccination or a recent negative COVID test result." The rep confirmed Osnes exited the show, but didn't comment on why she left.

What could have prompted the action according to insiders was actor Tony Yazbeck, who co-stars in the production, pressed Osnes on the matter of vaccination because "he has two little kids at home."

A rep for Osnes declined to comment, and a rep for Yazbeck didn't get back to Page Six.

"The 'Crazy For You' show is part of a weekend program, called 'Stroman Presents!' that will also include a conversation with 'The Producers' stars Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane on Aug. 27, plus a 'sneak peek' at another musical, 'Little Dancer,' starring Terrence Mann of 'Les Misérables,' on Aug. 28," Page Six added.

Newsweek reports that according to her official website, Osnes rose to fame after winning the NBC reality television competition "Grease: You're The One That I Want," which got her the role of Sandy in the Broadway revival of" Grease" at 21 years of age.

Since then she's landed roles in a host of famed musicals including as Nellie Forbush in "South Pacific," as well as Cinderella in Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella" and as Bonnie Parker in "Bonnie & Clyde." She received Tony Award nominations for her roles in Cinderella and "Bonnie & Clyde."

Osnes has also starred in the Hallmark Channel original movies "A Homecoming For The Holidays" and In "The Key Of Love." She was also seen in television series including "Fosse/Verdon" on F/X, "Dynasty" on CW, and "Elementary" on CBS.
