HBO's Girls :: Bad Friend

Friends. That's what this episode of "Girls" is about and it takes a square look at two of Hannah's (Lena Dunham) friends: Elijah and Marnie. You see, Hannah has applied for a job at a blog site called "Jazz/Hate" and is given the option to write about whatever personal experience she wants to. When it is suggested she do a bunch of cocaine and Hannah admits she's never done it, she goes for that option. So she teams up with gay roommate Elijah (Andrew Rannells) for a Wednesday night out on cocaine -- the funniest part being the fact that they decide to start doing the coke at four in the afternoon, a sort of "old-timers druggie happy hour."

Meanwhile, Marnie (Allison Williams) is dealing with the groping hands of older gentleman at her new hosting job and runs into over-confident Booth (Jorma Taccone -- who I am ridiculously attracted to). He basically tells her to follow him out of work (she is easily seduced by him as if he has Svengali like powers) and they go back to his studio.

There she is put into a cage of sorts, surrounded by TVs that show gross images of decaying flesh and crying babies. This is Booth's art. That and a Crime-Scene Dollhouse. When the two have sex, he makes her stare at an old doll as he lies on her back. So, needless to say, Booth is kind of weird and Marnie is in desperate need to find herself.She's too easily distracted, unfocused and manipulated.

Meanwhile, Jessa (Jemima Kirke) is selling her clothes on the street and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) is busy complaining about new beau Ray watching reruns of "Ally McBeal" all night.

But the real focus of the episode is Hannah, who meets her ex-Junkie neighbor Laird (Jon Glaser) in order to score the coke she needs to do to write her article. She and Elijah go to a dance club where, as they do more coke, he reveals he slept with Marnie. Hannah immediately sobers up (as best you can when on coke) and is extremely unhappy.

It's curious why she'd be pissed since the "sex" lasted all of fifteen seconds because he got limp. But it all has to do with jealousy, boundaries, and possession. Not that Hannah possesses Elijah in any way, but the memory of him being her boyfriend for two years in college is what she holds on to. And it is now scarred by Marnie getting her vagina in the way. "We can keep being friends as long as you know you're a bad one!"

Hence the title of the episode: Bad Friend.

This also harkens the best exchange of the night when Hannah yells at Elijah (who she winds up kicking out of her apartment) for causing the night to run afoul."You ruined my night! You ruined my relationship with Marnie! And for that matter, you ruined my relationship with cocaine, which COULD have been my favorite drug!"

But no worries. She might have lost two best friends, but in the end, she finds herself macking on Laird in the hallway of their apartment building. That girl gets more action than most of the gay guys I know. Girl's got game!

And so does "Girls."
