'God Hates Fags' Singer Michelle Shocked Tells SF Audience

Folk singer Michelle Shocked surprised fans in San Francisco on Sunday evening when she stole the Westboro Baptist Church's motto and told her audience, "God hates fags," according to Meow Online.

The website notes that Shocked was playing at a San Francisco club called Yoshi's and launched into an anti-gay rant during her second sent. The singer reportedly said that she lives in fear of same-sex marriage and told her audience, "You can go on Twitter and say 'Michelle Shocked says God hates fags.'"

One of the audience members, Matt Penfiled, took her advice and live tweeted the performance.

"Eerie foreshadowing at Michelle Shocked show," Penfield wrote. "before the show she talked about how 'people seem like your friends then they turn on you.'" He also wrote that her first set was "all cool. 2nd set, she got up went full hate speech."

Another fan tweeted about the event and wrote, "wow, she's a total bigot and said so on stage. It was unreal. We had to leave. I am so disappointed."

"She said she lives in fear that the world will be destroyed if gays are allowed to marry," @anile02, an audience member wrote on Twitter.

Not long after the incident occurred, the singer herself tweeted, "Truth is leading to painful confrontation #shortsharpshocked."

According to the New Civil Rights Movement, audience members were furious over Shocked's statements and walked out on her set in protest.

After two-thirds of the audience left, the Yoshi staff closed the show down.

"Even more horrified than the audience were Yoshi's staffers," reported the SFGate website. "The manager, assistant club manager, and sound production engineer who were on duty shut down the show immediately, turning off the lights and cutting off the microphone, said Yoshi's representative Lisa Bautista. An apology was made and refunds were offered."

The Austin singer-songwriter has been on the alt-folk scene for decades and put out her first record, "The Texas Campfire Tapes," in 1986. According to her biography on All Music Guide, Shocked, 51, moved to San Francisco in the '80s where she "quickly embraced the city's punk scene." The site says her debut album has a "postmodern feminist perspective and punk attitude." Her Wikipedia page points out that she attends West Angeles Church of God in Christ, a Pentecostal Christian church in Los Angeles, and that she was arrested in 2011 during an Occupy protest.
