Where to Go in 2015: Cape Town

Matthew Wexler READ TIME: 3 MIN.

It was the first country in Africa to legalize gay marriage in 2006, and now South Africa seems to be a narrow beam of light in the continent's struggle for LGBT equality. At its epicenter and shining strong is the nation's legislative capital, Cape Town. The coastal city has it all: gorgeous beaches (along with gorgeous people populating them), nearby wineries, boutique and luxury hotels, and a social calendar packed with events above and beyond its legendary Pride celebration.

The destination also gets a vote of confidence from the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association. "Never in its 32 years has IGLTA held a convention in Africa - until now. We head to Cape Town in April 2016 because it represents the future of travel for our community," said IGLTA's president and CEO John Tanzella. "It will mark the 10-year anniversary of the legalization of gay marriage, but beyond that, it is a city brimming with nightlife, nearby wineries, and adventure and cultural tourism."

Out of this World
Mr. Gay World returns to South Africa in 2015, with the grand finale held in Cape Town on Sunday, May 3. The global competition, aimed at celebrating both inner and outer beauty, brings together a diverse collection of hot men in a celebration of queer culture and human rights advocacy.

Wine Not?
No trip to Cape Town is complete without a wine adventure. Join Katie Barratt (aka The WineFairy) as she navigates the Cape Winelands, including the gay-owned boutique wine estate and guest house Holden Manz.

Island Life
For luxury respite from the day's adventures, head to One&Only Cape Town, an opulent property located at the city's Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. In addition to its seven-story property with views of Table Mountain, you can choose to stay on either of their two pristinely landscaped private islands, surrounded by waterways and glimmering city lights in the distance.

Extended Adventure
You've made it all the way to Africa, so take advantage of the surrounding natural beauty. Out2Africa specializes in tailor-made, gay-friendly tours that will transport you to neighboring regions such as Victoria Falls, Kruger National Park and Madikwe (one of the country's largest game reserves).
