Couvillion says visiting an elephant sanctuary is a life-changing experience, but make sure it's reputable and not just for tourists. "It should have rescued elephants from work camps or as entertainers in the cities," he says. "The tourist thing should be secondary to the elephant's welfare."
Paddle and Peddle
Take a boat trip through the floating markets outside of Bangkok, then switch to a bike and traverse the countryside to see ancient temples and locals without the tourist element.
