Philly Fight Women and Girls HIV Awareness Health Fair

On Saturday, March 7, Philadelphia FIGHT, Caring People Alliance and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia will jointly celebrate National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day with a community health fair from 1-3 p.m. at R.W. Brown Community Center, 1707 N 8th Street.

National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is an annual observance on March 10 to recognize the impact of HIV on women and girls. According to the Centers for Disease Control, women make up 20 percent of the new HIV infections in the United States. A shocking 80 percent of the new infections among women were from African Americans and Hispanics.

The event will provide women, girls and families with resources that will help prevent the spread of HIV. There will be a community fair of various health and community-based organizations providing free rapid HIV testing and blood pressure screenings. Health professionals will be also on site to answer any questions regarding the disease and to provide free and confidential HIV tests.

In addition, there will be good music, free food and healthy activities, including storytelling by individuals living with HIV/AIDS. A live DJ will lead the crowd in line dancing, and there will be a giveaway of a free flat screen television. ?

Philadelphia FIGHT is a comprehensive health services organization providing primary care, consumer education, research, and advocacy for people living with HIV/AIDS and those at high risk. FIGHT's goal is to end the AIDS epidemic within the lifetime of those currently living with HIV.
