Family Questions Lack of Hate Crime Charge in Stabbing

The family of a Louisiana man who was stabbed over the weekend is calling the assault a hate crime, but police said the evidence doesn't support that.

Holden White, 18, was stabbed in the neck and wrists and was in critical condition Monday, Lafayette police spokesman Sgt. Wayne Griffin told news outlets.

Authorities arrested Chance Seneca, 19, Saturday and charged him with attempted second-degree murder.

White's family told news outlets that White met Seneca through Grindr, a dating app for gay, bisexual and transgender men.

The family said it believes the stabbing was a hate crime targeting White because he was gay and questions authorities' reasoning for not classifying it as one.

Griffin said the stabbing won't be classified as a hate crime because nothing in the case has pointed in that direction.

Authorities who responded to a call about 11:45 p.m. Saturday found White suffering from a large stab wound to his neck, Griffin said. Seneca was at the scene.

Griffin said the pair got into an argument and Seneca stabbed White.

Further details regarding the case weren't immediately released. It's unclear whether Seneca had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
