The L Word - The Complete Final Season

Those of you that have followed along with Showtime's hit lesbian series The L Word are now able to enjoy the show's final sixth season on DVD.

As usual, the stories of the gorgeous Californian girls are filled with angst, joy, and this season, plenty of intrigue. The season is fairly short, only eight episodes (the other seasons average twelve or thirteen), packaged on three discs. Unfortunately, the bonus features leave a bit to be desired.

Fans of the show that are hoping for in depth looks into the filming process or lives of the actors will be disappointed to find very little in this area. Instead, disc 3 contains the last two episodes of the show ("Last Couple Standing" and "Last Word") plus some footage from the 11th Annual Women's Event of the New York LGBT Community Center, a compelling 25-minute documentary on lesbians from different generations and their coming out stories, "Gay American Heroes" with Daniela Sea (Max), and some photos from Jennifer Beals' on-set experience. The latter likely has the most draw for those looking for insight into the show, but be forewarned that there are a limited number of photos for viewing. In fact, it's more of a teaser to sell a book that will be coming out containing a larger collection of photos and other keepsakes that Jennifer Beals collected throughout her six years on the show.

Putting the last disc into your computer also gets you a few more features, such as access to a chapter from a book by Marlee Matlin entitled "I'll Scream Later," the first two episodes of Unite States of Tara: Season 1, and two episodes of The Tudors: Season 3.

All in all, the lovely (and somewhat erotic) packaging of the the sixth and final season of the L Word doesn't gloss over the fact that much of the bonus feature materials are there to help sell other items. However, you're still getting the final season of an excellent show, and really, that's what it's all about. Season 6 is available October 20th, 2009 at the suggested retail price of $62.99 (although you'll like it find it much lower than that if you shop around) from Paramount Home Entertainment.
